Solar Cookers Needed Recently, the Archdiocese of Portland decided to offer direct support to our displaced Sudanese brothers and sisters by purchasing solar cookers for use in the refugee camps. Firewood is a scarce commodity in the refugee camps in Chad, where many Sudanese live. The long trips to gather firewood leave women and children vulnerable to physical and sexual assault by Janjaweed militias as well as migrant bandits in the area. Use of a solar cooker cuts firewood consumption by 40% and thus reduces the frequency of these dangerous trips. For only $30, two solar cookers can be provided to a family of five to seven This amazing program offers Oregon Catholics an opportunity to be involved in the well-being of Sudanese refugees, and support efforts to ensure that the dignity and safety of Sudanese refugees increases. Donations to this program should be made out to "American Jewish Committee - Solar Cooker Project" and mailed to the Archdiocese Pastoral Center, 2838 E. Burnside, Portland, OR 97214-1895.

Men’s Group Twenty parishioners attended a men’s retreat at St. Mary’s Albany the second Saturday in September. Fr. Ray Carey lead the retreat which examined Christ’s statement to Peter, James and John in the Garden at Gethsemane. “Rise, let us be on our way” Fr. Carey’s thorough - informative style kept all involved and engaged, focusing on how this statement calls catholic males to action. The men’s retreat was also a kick off event for a Men’s Group that will meet Wednesday evenings at 7:00 in the Chapel. The Men’s Group would like to have more speakers like Fr. Carey and offer a venue for parish men to have conversations with other catholic males. All men, young and older, are invited to attend. Any questions can be directed to Richard Amos 791 2101, Jeff Barricks 929 2649 or Tuan Nguyen 979 3266 Infant Baptism ClassesIf you would like your child (kindergarten or younger) to be baptized, you will need to attend the next series of baptism classes on Sat. St. Mary's Bereavement Ministryprovides the food for the funeral receptions. Volunteers make salads, desserts and serve at the reception. We have experienced a higher than average number of funerals this year. We understand everyone's busy schedules, so we would like to add more names to our list so volunteers are not called as often. The grieving families are very appreciative of this service our church provides and volunteers spend many hours supporting this ministry. If you would like to be on the list to bring food, help serve or have questions regarding this ministry, please email: StMarysBereavement@comcast.net or call: Sharon Konopa 926-6812 |
