Catechumenate for Adults

(RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation))

Adults join the church through a process called the Rite of Christian Initiation. In our parish the RCIA generally meets on Sunday mornings from 9:40 till 10:45 AM in the youth loft. Adults generally join the church each year at the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter.)

The RCIA is divided into several stages. The first stage is called Inquiry. It is an opportunity to ask questions and to learn some basic things about the Church. It is also a time when the candidates grow in their prayer life and in their knowledge and love of Jesus.

The second stage is called the Catechumenate. During this stage, the catechumens (those who have not been baptized) and the candidates (those who are baptized) will learn more about the Scriptures. They will also go deeper into what the church teaches. And most importantly, they will continue to grow in their relationship with Jesus.

The third stage is called Purification and Enlightenment. It takes place during the Lenten season. It is like a retreat for those who are preparing to be baptized or join the church at the Easter Vigil. (the night before Easter).

Any adult who is not baptized, or an adult who is baptized in another religious tradition is invited to attend the RCIA.

Adult Catholics who have not made their First Eucharist are also invited to attend the Catechumenate.Adult Catholics who want to be confirmed, but who have made their First Communion, should look into the Confirmation classes for adults.
